Tea and its history

For centuries, the enjoyment of tea has been characterised by its ceremonial nature. Whether during a quiet moment alone or shared around the breakfast table, a cup of tea has become an indispensable part of most households. It enjoys great popularity, particularly in Switzerland, and, at around two cups a day, is consumed even more frequently than coffee. Only water is more popular.
Women drink almost twice as much tea as men. Fruit and herbal teas are particularly popular. But tea is also often drunk as an alternative to coffee: whether green, black or matcha tea, around 40 per cent of Swiss people appreciate the stimulating effect of these varieties and make use of them. A freshly brewed cup of green tea contains around 50mg of caffeine and is therefore not far off the caffeine content of a cup of coffee (approx. 90mg).

Cultivation and production

However, there is a long way to go before the finished tea is ready to buy. Tea has been grown and produced in various parts of the world for thousands of years. The production process begins with the harvesting of the tea plant. This is a shrub whose leaves are often picked by hand.
Interesting fact: All teas trace their origins back to either Chinese tea or Assam tea. As these are the first two types of tea, all more modern varieties are derived from them.
Once some of the moisture has been removed from the leaves, they are rolled. This process is repeated several times and serves to break open the leaf cells and intensify the flavour. This is followed by fermentation, which plays a key role in the production process and influences the quality of the tea in question.
Finally, the leaves are dried, which can be done in various ways. Most often, they are turned so that they dry evenly. This is followed by the separation of the individual leaf fragments using vibrating sieves. All that remains is for the tea to be packaged and dispatched so that tea lovers can buy the finished product.

Buying Tea in Switzerland

As well as visiting the supermarket, buying tea online has become particularly well established in Switzerland. The wide selection available online has been a major factor in this. A purchase can be completed with just a few clicks, and the fast delivery means that more and more people are turning to this method of shopping.
This popular drink is characterised above all by its versatility: whilst some tea drinkers buy loose-leaf matcha tea for a special taste experience and use it to make a delicious matcha latte, others opt for the classic varieties in tea bags.
However, a single type of tea can be prepared in various ways. For example, varying the amount of tea poured over with hot water can alter the intensity of the flavour. Furthermore, adding a wide variety of extras can literally sweeten the drinking experience. Whether it’s rock sugar, honey or sweetener: anyone who hasn’t tried these options yet should buy them to go with their tea.
Tea has long been regarded not just as a hot drink, but can also be enjoyed cold, especially in summer. Special varieties are available for this purpose, which can be brewed cold. This means tea lovers can still buy and enjoy their favourite tea even in summer! Ice cubes and a dash of lemon juice can round off the flavour.

Only the best quality

Consciously savouring a cup of tea is all about mindfulness. This attitude is reflected in the choice of tea variety: more and more people are prioritising quality over quantity and opting for organic tea. The organic label, which can be found on the packaging, identifies teas that come from organic farming.
Unlike conventionally produced teas, these contain lower levels of problematic substances, such as pesticides. If you want to buy a tea that meets these standards, you should look out for the organic tea label when making your purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions
