This is the dandelion

The dandelion belongs to the Asteraceae family and is one of the best-known and most widespread wild plants in Central Europe. Due to its ability to spread rapidly, it is often perceived by many as a weed and is widely eradicated. After a few weeks, the yellow flowers of the dandelion turn into small seed heads. These detach easily and are thus quickly dispersed by the wind. Because these seed heads detach so easily – which also happens when you blow on them – the plant is often referred to as a ‘dandelion’.

The plant itself has many uses. For example, it is frequently used as food for small animals. The flowers are processed into spreads, amongst other things. The leaves can be used in salads. Furthermore, foods such as honey are produced from dandelions.

The dandelion root is of particular significance. It is rich in valuable nutrients and therefore plays a role as a medicinal plant.

The history and tradition of the medicinal plant

As far back as ancient China, the dandelion root was used to benefit from its healing properties. There, it was employed to treat a wide range of ailments. But the plant was not only used for this purpose: it also played a role in rituals and was burned as incense or even smoked.

What’s in the dandelion root

Most of the plant’s nutrients are found in the roots, which is why they in particular have healing properties. For example, the root contains bitter compounds which stimulate the appetite and aid digestion. In this respect, they can help relieve ailments such as stomach ache. It is also said to be effective against heartburn. Another effect attributed to dandelion root is its diuretic action. It is therefore frequently used to treat urinary tract infections. Among other things, the root contains inulin, which is a type of dietary fibre. This not only has a positive effect on blood sugar levels but also aids digestion. Studies also suggest that it can help lower cholesterol levels.
This clearly demonstrates just how healthy the root actually is.

The various ways to use it

Dandelions and their roots can be consumed in many different ways. As already mentioned, dandelion flowers are edible and are often processed into spreads. The leaves can be used in salads.

To benefit from the health-promoting properties of the dandelion root, you can, for example, make tea from it. To do this, simply boil the root in plenty of water and then leave it to infuse. There are other ways to consume the root as well. However, if you’d rather not do this or would prefer to avoid the taste, you can opt for dietary supplements containing dandelion root. For example, there are dandelion capsules, which you can also find in our shop. Take one of these capsules once a day. Make sure not to exceed this recommended dose.

Can you eat the root as well?

As you know, both the flower and the leaves of the plant are edible. But can the nutrient-rich root be eaten as well? In principle, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t eat it. However, it is very bitter and isn’t to everyone’s taste. One way to eat dandelion root is to process it into a powder and use it as a spice. To do this, you simply need to dry the roots. Depending on your preference, you can of course also boil, fry or bread the root, etc.

If you’d rather not eat it, you can also opt for dietary supplements from our shop. Take dandelion root capsules once a day to meet your daily requirements.
